A leather jacket can last for years with a few simple habits. These steps cover everyday cleaning, conditioning, storage and what to avoid.
Everyday cleaning
- Wipe the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dust and light marks.
- Let the jacket dry naturally at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sunlight.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
Conditioning
Real leather can dry out over time. Apply a leather conditioner once or twice a year with a soft cloth, following the product instructions, and let it absorb before wearing. Faux leather does not need conditioning and is usually fine with a gentle wipe-down.
Storing your jacket
- Use a wide, padded hanger so the shoulders keep their shape.
- Keep it in a cool, dry place with some airflow. Avoid sealed plastic covers, which can trap moisture.
- Do not fold a leather jacket for long periods, as creases can set in.
What to avoid
- Soaking the jacket or putting it in a washing machine.
- Hair dryers and direct heat.
- Harsh household cleaners.
If the jacket gets wet, blot it gently, hang it to dry naturally and condition it afterward if it is real leather.
